Exploring & understanding the sentiment of NYC Subway riders

Project Overview

Hi! We are conducting a study of how New Yorkers feel about the subway, as we move into a new phase of subway use. As part of our design practice, we undertake self-directed design in order to better understand our community and needs, so we can help non profits and government design better products, services, and experience for the community.

If you would like to get involved, please fill out the below form, and a member of the research team will contact you.

Please stay tuned to this page for project updates.

Project Objectives

To better understand a broad set of sentiments about the NYC Subway and Buses, by drawing out insights. We will base these insights on a hybrid system of in-depth interviews, intercepts, online polls, and quantitative study.

The end result will be a short white paper explaining our findings.

Project Questions

Because we are at the beginning of our study, our view is quite broad. As the study continues, we will narrow into specific questions and areas of study.

As part of our study, we hope to understand the following:

  • What are people’s sentiments about riding the NYC Subway and buses?
  • What gaps or improvements do people need to ride the system?
  • What are the perceptions of crime and safety in the system? What does safety mean?
  • Why do you ride the subway and buses, and what might be stopping you?
  • What policies and procedures might help you in your daily commute?
